News & Events

Dear Friends of the JTS Foundation,

This note is to give you an update on the JTS Foundation and changes to the golf outing as of 2017:

Since 2001 our family has been amazed over and over again at the level of support and generosity from all whom have been connected to John and to our outing. Special thanks to Chris Trombetta for all his time and energy in getting this together each year and to John’s employer Fred Alger, who to this date treats our family like a part of their company.

Through your support and with contributions by the Schroeder family who donated proceeds from the 9/11 family fund we have been able to do great things.  Between 2001 and 2017, the foundation has awarded over $100,000 in scholarships to Long Island students to continue their education in college. In addition to scholarships, between 2001 and 2017 we have made donations in excess of $150,000 to worthy causes in the area. A few of significance are:

  • Viscardi Center to support students with severe disabilities
  • Christo Del Rey High School in the Bronx to provide access to college level classes to students in financial need.
  • Long Island Metro Lacrosse and the Greenport Tournament – Bridge Program to develop lacrosse in low income areas.
  • St. John’s University – to endow a scholarship to a business student in memory of John’s Mom, Nonie, who is an SJU Alum.
  • ALS Ride for Life – In memory of Sean Bowler, a family friend and St. Anthony’s lacrosse player who died from ALS.
  • Make a wish Foundation of Suffolk County and many other great local charities

Our goal is and always will be to provide joy, hope and optimism to families and communities in need. We are confident that we have adequate funds to be able to ensure the financial component to deliver on this goal. However the challenges of running a private foundation are not easy and are getting more difficult for a family run foundation.

With that being said our family has made the decision to transition the John T. Schroeder. Memorial Foundation to the JTS Memorial Fund, a Donor Advised Fund a fund of Essex County Community Foundation. The Schroeder family will still have 100% control over the direction of donations from the foundation and will continue to act as stewards of current and future contributions. This will reduce if not eliminate the administrative burden on my Dad and the family so we can stay focused on the goal of the foundation. We can still accept donations on John’s behalf to the fund that will be tax deductible to the donor. We can still award scholarships and grants to students and organizations in need.

The only significant change is to the logistics of our golf outing since we no longer have our own tax exempt status but rather leverage the tax exempt status of the community foundation the fund can’t host a fundraiser. The golf outing will now be run by Craig Vasey who has retired after nearly 39 years with the Suffolk County Police Department. At one time an avid golfer, he began organizing outings for charities he was associated with. These charities include but were not limited to the Riverhead Moose, Suffolk County Police Memorial Fund, and Christmas Magic.  He will now be running the golf tournament in benefit of John T. Schroeder Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Our hope is to continue the outing in John’s memory as an annual event to reconnect with friends, play some bad golf and shotgun a few beers! If we raise some money for the Foundation Fund that will be great but the main goal moving forward is to keep the memories alive.

Donations for hole sponsors to benefit the scholarship fund please email Matt at matthew.schroeder48@gmail.com, or for a tax deduction you can make a donation to the JTS Memorial Fund c/o ECCF.

Thank you again for your support over the years and if you have any questions regarding this transition please contact Matt Schroeder at 617-448- 0339.

Warmest Regards,

The Schroeder Family

Rock Hill Golf and Country Club, Manorville, NY

Please join family and friends for a great time at this year’s golf outing as we honor and remember John Schroeder and all the victims of September 11, 2001.  The outing proves time and time again to be a great way to reconnect with old and new friends, have a few beers and a few laughs.  So dust off the clubs and pack the cooler – it will be here soon!
